My friend Molly Ruggles recently released a new song called “Sea Of Lies.”
She was inspired to write it by the ongoing challenge of sorting through all the news and advertising and sound bites and spin and “blah blah blah” coming at us on an hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis.
I originally learned a version she created for four voices (the same four who sang on “My Sweet Honeydew (A Cappella).”
But then she decided to re-write/re-arrange/re-focus it for two voices plus her piano accompaniment.
That’s the version she ended up releasing to various streaming platforms.
It is the sort of melody — and message — which easily gets stuck in my brain on auto-repeat.
“Need a little peace… just a hint of hope — with a hand to hold, maybe I can cope.”
Molly sings lead vocal plus some extra harmonies.
I sing a few harmonies.
I think my favorite moment of the song is when we both sing “Save me… please save me” in harmony.
You are welcome to click here to stream it if the spirit moves you.
Molly also designed the artwork to accompany her song.
She is a multi-talented human being.
I am curious to learn — or be reminded — about how other human beings deal with all of the (dis)information coming at us 24/7.
I know some wise people turn off their phones and computers for hours at a time.
And others make sure to exercise (walk, swim, bike, and more), do some gardening, sit in meditation, cook with friends, take a bath, read a book, lie in a hammock, do some yoga, and/or cuddle with their loved ones (human, feline, canine and otherwise).
Deep breath in.
Deep breath out.
What are YOUR coping strategies these days?
One of mine is — no surprise — making music and doing music-related activities such as this blog.
I also find a lot of hope and inspiration learning a few details about people who are brave enough to run for office — whether on the town, city, county, state or national level — all around our country.
And then there are the flowering plants of the world!
They always lift my spirits.
Thank you to Molly for writing this song and then asking me to sing harmony with her.
Thank you to the generous and talented photographers at Pixabay.
And thank YOU for reading — and listening to — yet another blog post from me…
One more deep breath in.
And deep breath out.
PS: Just learned that “Sea Of Lies” has been added to the “Today’s Tunesmiths and Troubadours” playlist on Pandora!

Deepest of thanks, Will!
I wish I’d been moved to write a different song, but this is the world we live in, and it’s a song for our times. And it seems to me that telling the truth about the lies is a way to be more centered, stabilized.
I loved your post today because amidst the world with its troubles, there are nevertheless flowers blooming, gardens to tend, hammocks to enjoy, loved ones to hug, and much more.
Glad you like this blog post, Molly. I forgot to mention that “Sea Of Lies” has been added to the “Today’s Tunesmiths and Troubadours” station on Pandora. Maybe I add that info as a PS…
Yes, thank you!
Thank you for sharing Molly’s song and I love her art too … The sea of lies is so concerning and saddening 😟
I don’t listen to the news anymore… I check the headlines briefly from time to time, to keep up to date.
But other than that I challenge myself to speak the truth about life as accurately as possible. Have a peaceful weekend 💐💟
That sounds like a wise path, Morag.
Thanks for sharing Molly’s inspiring song. The harmonies are beautiful with poignant lyrics. My approach is to skim headlines, reduce social media, attempt to screen the junk, and limit my time. Balanced with nature time.
You are the second person who responded that they skim headlines. And, no surprise, you are wise enough to get out into NATURE on a regular basis (and take more beautiful photos!)
I try. Thanks Will. 🙏🌳
Just deep breath in ..slowly let it out and remember there is nothing new under the sun..And …Our Almighty /Creator is still in control.!
Amen!
Thanks for sharing Molly’s song. Kudos to her for writing about a serious subject in a way that is inviting people not to feel hopeless. A while back, I decided to focus on my local Audubon as something that gives me pleasure and that I could contribute to, as well. I’ve learned a lot about conservation issues there, and I’m glad that I can support local places and initiatives I care about in a concrete way, rather than just reading the news and worrying about things I cannot control.
I find that the thoughtful articles on WordPress (such as this one), and getting to know something about people as close as my own state, or on the other side of the world is very uplifting. There is strength in our connections!
Hurrah for becoming more involved with your local Audubon! You clearly have a love of the non-human world. And hurrah that it has led you deeper into learning about conservation issues! I have come to realize that (other than possibly giving a tiny amount of money to a worthy cause) most of what is in the news is way above my pay grade. Finding something local to support and participate in, however, is something that most of us CAN do — whether it’s our local Audubon or soup kitchen or food pantry or… fill in the blank. And yes, a sense of connectedness to a community — whether at one’s local Audubon or the community here on WordPress — can often help us get out of bed in the morning.
I barely listen to news, I take in nature, I read, and I work with children. That’s my ticket to coping.
You are wise, Jennie! Please keep doing all the wonderful things you do (and sometimes share with the rest of us…)
Will do, and thank you!
I just saw this post, Will. Great song, and I really like the harmonies. 💙
Things that help me–going out for walks and seeing nature helps a lot, exercise, getting lost in a novel, being with people I love.
Thanks for listening! Molly is not only a songwriter but a vocal arranger as well. She is responsible for all of the harmonies in the Molly, Will & Carole recordings. I am very glad for all of our sakes that you go for walks in nature because you often take great photos to share in your blog posts. I haven’t read a novel in a while (I end up reading lots of musical biographies…), but I do LOVE getting lost in the world of a book. And being with people we love is what it’s all about (the antidote for many ills…)
You’re welcome, Will!
I’m listening to the song on Apple Music right now. Very nice!
You are a peach, sir. Thank you!
You’re so welcome, Will. 🎶
Molly is one talented woman!
Yes, indeed!
Seen on a car this morning: “Make Lying Wrong Again.”
I like the sound of that! We could also make greed wrong again while we’re at it…
